Rekha Bharti

Rekha Bharti started singing at the age of eight. Early on, she used to sing the songs of Vamandada. Later she came into the company of famous poet Vijayanand Jadhav from Aurangabad and started singing Bhimgeet. She started a group called ‘Vamanacha Jatha’ with 25 other people. In it, she used to sing songs of Babasaheb, Savitribai Phule, Jyotirao Phule and Gautam Buddha. She has also sung Bhimgeet on All India Radio. The group used to travel with the Vamandas in Ahmedpur, Nanded district and other villages in Vidarbha. “Go anywhere you want, but don’t ever sell Bhimrao’s flag” is a famous song of hers. This song applies to the current situation, she added.

While still in school, she learned songs from her parents at an early age. She then developed her own singing style. She majorly sings in Qawwali form. Her gurus founded a very famous and renowned party ‘Milind Singing Party’. She was encouraged by Chandrakala Gaikwad, who used to  play her harmonium and sing songs at a very young age.

She has travelled and performed in Parbhani and Jalna and her songs were also aired on television and radio. She had the opportunity to go to Delhi with famous singer Uttar Kelkar.

She was initially opposed to Qawwali. Rekha Bharti Gayan Sanch Party was established in 1991. She said “Social workers, some singers helped a lot during Covid time. The event was not running and people should pay attention to the artists. It is the artists who are keeping Babasaheb’s movement alive. People should organise events. If the artist is alive then this movement is alive.”
